An academic visit to School of Animal Biotechnology, GADVASU was organized by the Department of Biotechnology for the final year B.Sc. Biotechnology students. Dr Deepak Deka of Molecular Diagnostics and Vaccinology elaborated on the technique of PCR and shared very important and valid practical points. Mr Barinder Singh an alumnus of our department pursuing his Ph.D. there demonstrated the PCR technique at length to the students and arranged for hands-on training for the students which made them understand the concept exhaustively. The students also got the opportunity to learn about the differences in the working of simple microscope and inverted microscope , Laminar Air Flow and Biosafety Cabinet. Dr Deka demonstrated the technique of Western Blotting and PAGE in a comprehensive manner. He also focussed on minute detailing of setting up an experiment. He also shared the aims of the DBT funded projects running presently in his lab. The various projects aim at molecular characterization of and developing vaccines for the various disease- causing viruses. He was courteous enough to take up students' queries. He made the students tour his lab and get familiar with the working of other highly sophisticated instruments. A visit to the Department of Entomology, College of Agriculture, PAU was also paid. Dr Vikas Jindal, Assistant Entomologist showed around in his Cell Culture and Molecular Biology lab where the study of the functions of various genes in insect through RNAi is being carried out through molecular biology techniques. He demonstrated the working of NanoDrop Spectrophotometer, Gel Documentation System, Tissue Homogenizer, Microinjection Assembly and Cryostorage set up (-80 degree celsius). He elaborated on the cloning procedure, blue -white screening method and post -cloning confirmation steps. He also shared his knowledge on CRISPR technology and gene editing. It was a great and enriching experience for the students.
